BREAKING: New Zealand to move to alert level 2 on Thursday

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says New Zealand will move to alert level 2, beginning Thursday 14 May.

“We are ready to move to level 2,” announced Ardern today.

Case numbers remain low, says Ardern, pointing to the two days this past week with no cases. Experts say that if this trend continues, New Zealand will eventually achieve the goal of eliminating the virus.

Retail, malls, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and other public places including playgrounds and gyms can reopen on Thursday, 14 May.

From 14 May, people can move around New Zealand but must be mindful of social distancing. “Go to a local tourism site, visit a local business,” says Ardern.

On Monday 18 May, children and young people will return to school and early learning.

On Thursday 21 May, bars will be able to open with new level 2 requirements. “We have left bars to last because they do pose a big risk,” explains Ardern.

She says Kiwis can see family and friends, but must follow the level 2 guidance around limiting gatherings to no more than 10 people. “Go and see your mum, just don’t make it a big family reunion,” says Ardern.

She reminds people of the golden rules of level 2: keep your distance. If you’re sick stay home. Wash your hands. Don’t get together socially with more than 10 people at once and keep track of people you’ve seen.

“There are risks ahead so please be vigilant at level 2. Keep it small, keep your distance and be kind.”
