Barbie debuts its most diverse line of dolls yet
Barbie has expanded its line of inclusive toys, debuting new dolls that are “the most diverse” to be sold yet.

The new additions to the Fashionistas line have a range of hairstyles, skin tones and body types.

Included in the collection is a doll with vitiligo, an autoimmune condition that causes loss of skin colour.

Mattel worked with a dermatologist to make sure the condition was accurately represented on the doll.

“As we continue to redefine what it means to be a ‘Barbie’ or look like Barbie, offering a doll with vitiligo in our main doll line allows kids to play out even more stories they see in the world around them,” said Mattel in a statement.

There’s also a bald Barbie and a doll with a gold prosthetic limb. The newest Ken doll features long hair.

It comes after Mattel released a line of inclusive dolls last year to mark Barbie’s 60th birthday.

Mattel collaborated with a 12-year-old disability activist to create a doll with a prosthetic limb and a doll in a wheelchair to debut the Fashionistas line.

The new dolls to be added to the Fashionistas line are the latest in a five-year brand reinvention by Mattel to improve inclusivity in the Barbie collection, after receiving criticism for not being diverse enough.

In recent years, Mattel has also introduced a doll that wears a hijab, and a line of gender-neutral dolls.
