Australians have the world’s biggest appetite for Veganism

Australians have the world’s biggest appetite for learning about all things vegan, as shown by Google Trends.

An analysis of searches from around the globe during 2018 shows Australia has the highest percentage of searches for the word “vegan” out of all searches done.

According to Google, search interest in “vegan” information is at an all-time high in Australia. And it’s easy to see why. The arguments for leaving animal-derived foods off our plates have never been stronger.

Every year, billions of animals are incarcerated, mutilated, and killed in the meat, egg, and dairy industries. Before their throats are slit – often while they’re still conscious – these sensitive individuals are exploited in ways most of us could never even imagine. Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that a global shift towards vegan eating is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. Plus, there’s the fact that eating foods containing animal fats could be killing us, as documented by World Health Organisation reports that place processed meat on the list of cancer-causing substances.

“It’s great to see that Aussies are ahead of the curve when it comes to vegan living,” says PETA’s Emily Rice. “Every single person who googles the word ‘vegan’ is finding information that will improve not only their health but also the environment and the lives of animals.”

In another victory for the country, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth all scored spots in the global list of top vegan cities, coming in at fifth, sixth, ninth, and 10th, respectively.

The top vegan-related queries on Google are, unsurprisingly, for animal-free recipes and food, while rising in frequency are searches regarding vegan fast-food options.
