Auckland moving to alert level 3 from midnight tomorrow

Auckland will move to alert level 3 from midnight tomorrow, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced. Auckland will remain in alert level 3 for at least two weeks, which will be reviewed by cabinet.

The rest of the country remains at alert level 2. Cabinet has decided to revise the level 2 restrictions to allow for 100 people for indoor venues and gatherings.

Ardern says that level 3 provides the right rules to keep up the zero-tolerance approach and has urged people to remain cautious. People may only extend their bubble to close family, isolated people or caregivers.

Ardern has urged people over 65 in Auckland to remain at home until they are vaccinated, as they are part of a higher risk group.

Auckland has been in lockdown for 33 days – New Zealand’s longest lockdown to date.

22 new community cases of Covid were reported today – three of which are in Whakatīwai, Waikato. The case was a bailed man who went from Auckland to his home in the Waikato, where he appears to have infected three members of the household. One of the cases is a child who was symptomatic while attending a local school.

Dr Ashley Bloomfield has put a Section 70 notice in place for the area north of Highway 2. People who live, work or have travelled in this area must stay at home and monitor for symptoms. More details, including a map of the boundary, will be on the Ministry of Health’s website.

There are seven suburbs of interest in Auckland: Mt Eden, Massey, Māngere, Favona, Papatoetoe, Ōtara and Manurewa. The Ministry of Health has advised people in those areas to get tested, symptomatic of not.

“We are asking in particular for anyone living in Clover Park, on the south east side of Papatoetoe, to please get tested,” said the Ministry.
