Angelina Jolie shares 8 pieces of wisdom inspired by her own experiences.

Angelina Jolie has had a busy few years, going through two serious surgeries and a divorce while continuing her humanitarian work overseas and caring for her six children.

Despite the ups and downs, the actress, director and philanthropist has maintained a positive outlook on life.

Here are 8 pieces of life advice from Angelina Jolie:

Choose to be happy:

“I’ve realised that being happy is a choice”, says the dark-haired beauty. “You never want to rub anybody the wrong way or not be fun to be around, but you have to be happy. When I get logical and I don’t trust my instincts – that’s when I get in trouble.”

Learn from the bad:

Angelina is known for her resilient nature. The star previously told The Independent: “I do believe in the old saying, ‘What does not kill you makes you stronger.’ Our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. By overcoming difficulties, we gain strength and maturity.”

Respect your intelligence:

“Your intelligence is everything,” Angelina told Elle magazine. “Your mind and what you fill yourself with—you know, the woman that spends her day shopping is going to be that woman. And the woman that spends her day reading and travelling and learning and talking to people is going to be that woman. And that’s the woman you really want to be. I think we have to encourage young women to know that, because they’re getting fed a lot of the other. And then with that, they’ll know. They’ll know, and they’ll feel it. They’ll do the work because they’ll become more aware of the world.”

Eat well:

“Real food, I’ve found, is actually better than dieting”, Angelina said. The star is outspoken about the importance of looking after your body, having undergone a double mastectomy in 2013 and having her ovaries removed in 2015.

Let go of the past:

Speaking of her own personal experience, Angelina said: “it’s hard to be clear about who you are when you’re carrying a whole bunch of baggage from the past. I’ve learned to let go and move more quickly into the next place.”

Embrace your uniqueness:

We should celebrate what sets us apart from the rest, Angelina told Hello magazine last year. “Our diversity is our strength. What a dull and pointless life it would be if everyone was the same”, she maintains.

Aim big:

The star has always encouraged people to step outside of their shell and explore their interests. “If you don’t get out of the box you’ve been raised in, you won’t understand how much bigger the world is.”

Life is an adventure:

Angelina believes that we should think of life as an exciting journey and be thankful for what is to come. “Anytime I feel lost, I pull out a map and stare”, she told Marie Claire. “I stare until I have reminded myself that life is a giant adventure, so much to do, so much to see.”
