‘Diana’ is hitting the New York stage this March

Royal fans can start celebrating as a new Princess Diana musical is opening on Broadway this March. After a successful run in California, Diana is heading to the New York stage.

The show picks up in 1981 in the lead up to the royal wedding between Diana and Prince Charles.

Celebrating the spirit of the much-loved princess, the musical will delve into Diana’s up-and-down relationship with Prince Charles. It will also explore Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles and the strained relationship between Diana and the press.

British actress Jeanna de Waal will be reprising her role as Diana, remarking that it is a “huge privilege” to portray the princess. “I feel very daunted by the prospect, but I hope people who didn’t know about her and weren’t aware of her journey leave the theatre with an idea of what she did for the world,” she told Marie-Claire. “She made everyone feel special, from the highest person to the lowest-ranking person, and I think we want to celebrate her.”

Some critics question the show’s taste

Given the complicated subject matter, some critics have questioned the show’s taste. LA Times critic, Charles McNulty, says it “turns a complicated life into light entertainment.” Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty states “it is in such bad taste that it’s best ignored.”

It will be up to audiences to decide whether the show is a true celebration or a portrayal in bad taste.
