Break-ups can be completely devastating - and in the early days after a relationship ends, you’re likely to be turning anywhere for comfort, including pop culture.

Music, movies and TV shows about break-ups show you that you’re not alone in your experience – far from it! Whether you’re looking for a tear-jerker to release some endorphins with a good cry, or wanting to see how strong characters have bounced back after heartbreak, here are our top picks to get you through when you’re feeling down.

500 Days of Summer

Many of us have experienced that classic scenario of imbalance during a relationship – put simply, you like them more than they like you. 500 Days of Summer details Tom’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) relationship with Summer (Zooey Deschanel), a girl he thinks is ‘the one’ but she doesn’t want to commit. It’s a highly relatable storyline, and it will tell you not to ignore those red flags in future entanglements.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) start a relationship, unaware they have previously dated and had chosen to erase their memories of each other after they broke up. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind speaks to the old adage ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all’. Lord knows, shortly after a break-up, it doesn’t feel that way! But this sci-fi flick  might give you some comfort.

He’s Just Not That Into You

The name says it all really. Say it, memorise it, repeat it: he’s just not that into you! As soon as many of us get that into our heads, we’ll be saved from so much heartbreak. He’s Just Not That Into You is a star-studded affair, with Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper among the cast.

The film explores four different plot lines, with characters all navigating the often confusing world of love and dating.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

All cried out? It’s time to laugh. Forgetting Sarah Marshall follows Peter (Jason Segel) after he is dumped by his famous TV girlfriend Sarah Marshall. He takes himself on a holiday to Hawaii to try to mend his broken heart, only to find Sarah and her new boyfriend are staying at the same hotel. This movie will show you there’s light at the end of the tunnel while also having you in fits of giggles.

Sliding Doors

A film that proves you can thrive after ending a relationship, and that Gwyneth Paltrow can pull off any hairstyle. Sliding Doors depicts two possible scenarios after Helen (Paltrow) is fired from her job and rushes to catch the train. In the first scenario, she gets on the train and comes home to a situation that leads to the end of her relationship with her boyfriend. In the second, she misses the train, meaning her life goes on much as usual. Sliding Doors is a movie that reveals how a break-up is quite often the best thing to ever happen to you.

Legally Blonde

Just when Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) was preparing to a live out her days as a kept woman, she has her heart broken by boyfriend Warner. The event propels her to get accepted to Harvard Law School. Yes, she does do this to win Warner back… But once she gets there, he soon becomes irrelevant. Legally Blonde teaches us not to let other people’s opinions of us hold us back, and is another perfect example of how a break-up can lead you to live your best life.

How to Be Single

This one goes out to all the serial monogamists – before rebounding straight into another relationship, watch this film and learn the very important lesson in its title. Starring Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson and Alison Brie, this fun chick flick is all about self love, baby!
