Today is World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is a disease where bones are extremely weakened to the point where breakage can occur from minor movement. It is the most common disease that affects elderly people, and as of 2017 there is still no cure for it.
There are, however, some nutrients that can help prevent osteoporosis. “You can’t cure osteoporosis but unlike many other diseases, it is possible to take steps to prevent it,” explains Osteoporosis Australia’s Healthy Bones Australia ambassador, Susie Burrell.
Increasing your intake of calcium and vitamin D while cutting back alcohol and tobacco will help prevent osteoporosis. Dairy foods are rich in calcium, as well as kale, spinach and soybeans. Fatty fish, cheese and egg yolks are good sources of vitamin D.
