Far From Boring, White Hues Provide Ideal Springboard For Your Interior Style
Far from boring, white walls give you an open canvas on which to depict your own taste and style – inviting a calm, creative summer season. MiNDFOOD's Editor-In-Chief Michael McHugh shares the shades he loves.

There is nothing quite like a crisp, white wall to create your dream interior space. Whether you want to add wooden furniture with coffee tables or shelving, big comfy velvety sofas, linen curtains or bright ceramic vases or artwork, white walls give you the very best starting point to kickstart the creation of your very own personal style.

Remember, creativity and self-expression in your own home is key. Unlock that creative genius within by starting with a white paint from Resene – they come in many shades and there is so much to be inspired by. Whether it be minimalist Scandinavian chic, a coastal retreat aesthetic, a boho vibe or art-gallery cool, the range of whites at Resene is endless. The fun part is choosing the ‘just perfect’ hue this summer.

Michael’s interior colour inspiration

White walls are the perfect canvas to showcase bold art.

Turn your room into a personal gallery by hanging oversized artwork with simple black, white or natural wood frames to keep the focus on the art.

Walls (above) are painted in Resene White Thunder, through the doorway in Resene Flotsam, and the floors are finished in Resene Colorwood Becalm, giving the room a warm glow.

The artwork is one of my paintings ‘Woven Anthology’ available at Föenander Galleries Auckland, and looks great with a black frame against the Resene White Thunder walls.

I do love the minimalist Scandinavian style as it looks so considered and relaxed with those crisp, clean lines giving a spatial airiness to any interior with beautiful, creamy-white colouring.

On the wall (above) we have used Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Meringue and Resene Solitaire on the floor.

Resene have such a great selection of whites so in this space we have chosen a white that is warm and inviting. Even though there are minimal pieces of furniture, it still says, ‘Come sit and relax, fondue anyone?’ Chill out, so Scandinavian.

Don’t you just love wall panelling? I’ve never tried it myself . Wanting to get it just right, my wife often suggests ‘Let’s just get a man in’ as panelling gives a space a luxurious feel by layering. And when you choose your shade of white, ivory, cream or pearl, it lifts the interior, adding visual interest and texture to the wall.

Of course, I can never resist a velvet green sofa but that’s just me. The wall and mouldings are painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Quarter Linen and the floor is finished in Resene Colorwood Bark, anchoring the white panelled walls.

Range. Range. Range. That’s what you have with Resene when you want to choose the perfect white to start your summer decorating. From Designer White to Black White, Alabaster and Thorndon Cream, there are so many beautiful shades and Resene always has that perfect hue to get you started.

Talk to one of their team as they have so much knowledge and always seem to know just what you’re looking for.

Add a little texture with FX Faux Rust Effects using Resene Flotsam as seen on the walls and shelf and finished in Resene Colorwood Shade on the floors. It will give any space that creative vision and a wonderful backdrop to really enhance furniture and décor within your home.

Rather than that hard-edged, textured paint effect left over from the ’80s, this time round the rust effect is much more subtle and inviting. Try it, it’s super cool.
