There’s no denying the bob haircut is still one of the most wanted hair styles around.
We’ve had all manner of versions from French ones with a micro fringe, to the flicky ‘Butterfly Bob’, chic tucked-under versions and even the very non-committal and safe, long bob.
Now, here comes the ‘hydro bob’. It’s less of a cut and more of a styling approach, putting a new spin on slicked-back, wet-look hair.
What is a ‘hydro bob’?
A hydro bob is a chin-length bob haircut that is worn scraped straight-back in distinctive, sleek, and wet-look finish. The aim is to give the appearance of hair you wear when you have just come out of the water, thanks to its glossy, smooth, and sometimes slightly tousled texture.
The sleek and cool look is unsurprisingly a hit with celebrities for black tie and red carpet events as it works well with evening outfits and has the useful ability to show off glamourous jewellery like bold necklaces and earrings.
Experts say the hydro bob’s appeal also lies in its sharp, slightly androgynous, tailored look. It gives an edge of cool to a very feminine outfit.
How to style the ‘hydro bob’
British hairdresser and trend predictor Tom Smith says the trend is seriously taking off.
“I’m seeing more and more hydro bob references,” he says. “This is absolutely a hairstyle trend that is growing, the best part is, you can achieve this vibe on most haircut shapes that sit between the length of your jaw and collarbone – so its easy for many people to try.”
Smith says instead of water, which obviously dries, try the slicked-back look with a hair treatment product.
“Use a moisture mask, use a repair mask use Olaplex number 3 [a repair product],” suggests Smith. “Use it as a styling product and leave it in your hair”.
He says trying the look with hair tucked behind one ear or even with a side parting are other options to play with.
Given it’s damp appearance, the hydro bob is taking off in the northern hemisphere where the weather is heating up, where it’s been worn by Kaia Gerber, Florence Pugh, Jennifer Lopez and more.
