New footage shows the moment a dam collapsed in southern Brazil, releasing a torrent of toxic sludge, as hopes of finding survivors fade.

A week after a dam collapsed in southern Brazil, killing least 115 people, with hundreds still missing, new footage as emerged of the fateful moment the dam burst.

The images, obtained by TV channel Bandeirantes, show the moment a muddy sludge engulfed the company canteen and neighbouring buildings in Brumadinho, in Minas Gerais state.

An investigation is under way.

The mine is owned by Vale SA. This is the second such incident at one of its mines in three years.

Amid grief and recriminations, many worry about the future, with area dependent on a mine now swallowed by the mud.

With hopes of finding survivors dwindling, talk of how to deal with the 12 million cubic metres of mud released is escalating.

Vale SA claim the residues did not have dangerous levels of metals, but experts argue the impact on the environment could be irreversible.

Authorities and environmental organisations have begun testing water quality around the mining complex, while Brazil’s state and federal authorities have told residents not to use water directly from the Paraopeba or 100m around it.

The surge buried buildings adjoining the dam and several parts of the nearby city of Brumadinho.
