During ITV’s concert, An Audience with Adele, the singer was taken aback by a surprise appearance by her former high school teacher.
The concert, which aired in the UK on Sunday 21 November, saw Adele performing in front of a host of celebrities, who took moments to ask the singer questions.
At one point, actress Emma Thompson asked her whether there was anyone in her past who had supported her, inspired her or protected her from “life’s trials and tribulations.”
In response, Adele said her high school English teacher, Ms McDonald, has a deep impact on her. “She got me really into English literature. Like, I’ve always been obsessed with English and obviously now I write lyrics. She was so bloody cool. So engaging… She really made us care, and we knew that she cared about us.”
Thompson then surprised Adele by telling her that McDonald was in the audience. The singer was moved to tears as she embraced her former teacher on stage, whom she hadn’t seen in 20 years.
“I’m so proud of you,” McDonald said to an emotional Adele. “You really did change my life,” she responded.
“Now, I’ve got to get my whole face re-done,” the singer joked, before bringing on British TV host Alan Carr to entertain the audience while she popped back stage.
