Walk the walk in Bangkok

Walk the walk in Bangkok
With 15 different walking tour itineraries in the Bangkok, you can take your pick of which areas you want to get up close and personal with, mixing with locals and discovering the city behind the scenes.

To get to know the old Bangkok, take the walking tour that goes behind the city wall. Start off with a hit of caffeine at the general store turned coffee shop, Kope HyaTaiKee, then stroll through the Baan Bat community, which makes the alms bowls used by monks. Not far from Wat Saket, the community craftsmen have been making these bowls since the 1700s – they make great souvenirs.

Another historic community is Trok Shanghai, an area founded by a group of 40 Chinese families from Shanghai in the reign of King Rama 1V. The community became known for the wooden furniture created by its carpenters, and one family has been making coffins for three generations.

Wat Saket is a major temple dating back to the Ayutthaya era, and visitors flock here to see its Golden Mount – or Phra Borom Bunphot – that contains the Buddha’s relics. It is also worth climbing to the top for an overview of the area.

Not far from Wat Saket is Loha Prasat, also known as the Metal Castle. Located in Wat Ratchanaddaram, the temple is 36 metres high with 37 metal spires that represent the 37 virtues toward enlightenment.

The fort of Pom Mahakan, constructed during the reign of King Rama 1 The Great is a highlight of this walk. This octagonal fort kept the old city safe, and its six large cannons on the two lower levels are still there.

To finish the walking tour, stop in at Nam Op Nang Loi, a business that has been selling scented water for more than 85 years.
