The scent, started out as a niche ‘if you know you know’ release from the US beauty brand but quickly picked up huge attention online for its unique approach. Instead of overwhelming and obvious floral notes, the perfume has a composition that is said to adjust slightly to the wearer’s unique body chemistry.
The ‘your-skin-but-better’ fragrance is designed to smell like a heightened version of your natural scent. Imagine the cosy feel of a soft, well-worn sweater – warm and subtly sexy – captured in a bottle. The packaging’s minimalist appearance and tactile, ‘thumb indent’ bottle, only added to its appeal.
‘You’ contains warm base notes like musk, ambrette, and ambrox, combined with fresh iris root and pink pepper. These notes create a soft, clean scent that is subtle and slightly different on each person who wears it. In recent times it has also been launched as a portable solid version, able to be carried in your handbag, as well as infused into a rich, moisturising body cream.
The brand story goes that it took Glossier founder Emily Weiss and the perfumery team 38 revisions to land on the famous scent, first released in 2017.
They must have put some extra work in since, because Glossier has just released two new twists on ‘You,’ available for a limited time.
New Glossier You offshoots
The two new arrivals, ‘Réve’ and ‘Doux’, have the same warm, musky ambrox and ambrette base as Glossier You, which means they smell a little different on everyone, but also introduce new elements for a slightly different fragrance personality.
Réve: This fragrance invites you into a dreamlike state with its soft and ethereal notes. Its name means ‘dream’ in French. With hints of fresh florals and a subtle warmth, Réve is perfect for those who love a light, airy scent that lingers beautifully throughout the day.
The notes in the scent include top note of buttercream, middle notes of plum butter, toasted almond, iris, Sandalwood and that warm ambrox and ambrette base.
Doux: In contrast, Doux offers a rich and comforting experience, blending warm vanilla with a touch of creamy musk. It’s an embrace of cosiness, ideal for anyone looking to indulge in a deeper, more sensual fragrance.
The notes include a top of sweet violet, middle of palo santo, frankincense and myrrh and the same base notes as the other scents. For another hint on what it smells like? In French, Doux means ‘soft’.
