Victoria reports record daily increase in coronavirus cases
Victoria has recorded its highest daily increase in coronavirus infections yet, with 317 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 28 are connected to known outbreaks, and 289 are under investigation by Victoria’s public health team.

Two men in their 80s died overnight, and there are 109 COVID-19 patients in hospital with 29 of those in intensive care.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews said despite the rise in infections, the state is seeing “relative stability” in its case numbers.

“We have made the point with these stay at home restrictions only a week old, it will take some time to bring stability to the numbers and start to see a pattern where they are driven down,” the premier said.

The previous record for daily increase in any state or territory since the pandemic began was on Friday, when Victoria announced 288 new cases.

It comes as Australia’s unemployment rate jumped to the highest level since November 1998, rising to 7.5 per cent in June from 7.1 per cent in May.

The jump in the jobless rate came even as employment surged by 210,800 in June following hefty falls in April and May.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the regained jobs showed Australia is “making progress”.

“What we’ve seen in today’s job numbers is the ability of the economy to restore those losses. We have seen a restoration of those 210,000 jobs,” he said.
