Venice Carnival Brings City to Life
Thousands of masked revellers descended upon the iconic Italian city

In a celebration that has gone on for centuries, thousands of masked revellers took part in the famous Venice Carnival over the weekend. The theme of the 2017 Carnival was “The Fair of Vanity and Beauty”, and explored the celebrated splendour of the city.

The Carnival opened with an impressive water show between the Tre Archi Bridge and the Guglie Bridge in Cannaregio, where masked performers paraded in traditional boats.

Others participated in the festivities in Saint Mark’s Square, dressed as protagonists from Venetian history.

The event traces its history as far back as 1162 as a celebration of a battle victory. Initially the masks were used as a way of breaking down social order. Today the event is seen more as a celebration of art and culture.
