UAE appoints Minister for Happiness
A change in the UAE government structure and portfolios heralds a shift in focus.

This week the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the establishment of a new post, Minister of State for Happiness. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, also known as Sheikh Mohammed took to Twitter to make the announcement in English explaining that this post “will align and drive government policy to create social good and satisfaction.”

Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Emir (ruler) of Dubai, declared changes to key areas of the government while the emirate hosted the World Government Summit.

The World Government Summit is a 3 day program for over 150 governments and international organisations, intended to be a platform to share knowledge to improve services to humanity. The program includes sessions on topics like mindful leadership, the future of trade, sustainable development, healthcare, science and technology.

The details released by Sheikh Mohammed on changes to his government spoke of merging ministries, the creation of new ministries and ministry title changes, for example “Ministry of Social Affairs will become the Ministry for Community Development”.

New posts and committees include the Minister of State for Tolerance, Youth National Council – to be led by an eligible young woman of no more than 22 years of age, Council of Scientists, and a Higher Education and Human Resources Council.

These newly established committees and posts are a part of the biggest structural change in the government’s history, as well as a reflection of a drive toward social progress. One message from Sheikh Mohammed read, “It is a beginning of a new journey of achievement and giving to the people and we ask Allah to help us to serve and take care of them.”
