A tsunami warning was issued to residents in California and Oregon, however according to the US Tsunami Warning System, the tsunami threat from the earthquake has now passed.
“If you are located in this coastal area, move inland to higher ground,” said a warning from the USA’s National Weather Service (NWS).
“Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring.
“Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.”
The NWS said an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.0 occurred 45 miles southwest of Eureka California.
