Toni Collette wins Best Actress award

Toni Collette has been named best actress for her role in ‘Hereditary’ at the 2018 Gotham Awards.

Toni Collette and Ethan Hawke are among the stars who were honoured at the 28th annual Gotham Awards in New York of Monday night.

The Gotham Awards, described as the unofficial start of awards season – which culminates with the Oscars in the northern spring – has gained prominence over the past few years by honouring films that went on to win Academy Awards including the likes of Birdman to Spotlight to Get Out and Moonlight.

Collette was named best actress for her role in supernatural horror, Hereditary, ahead of Michelle Pfeiffer in Where is Kyra? and Glenn Close for The Wife.

During a ceremony best feature went to The Rider, Chloe Zhao’s contemporary Western drama, while Hawk was named best actor for his role in First Reformed.

Away from the big screen, BBC America’s television spy drama Killing Eve, which stars Sandra Oh as an MI5 agent on the trail of an assassin, won breakthrough series in the long form category.
