Australian Fashion Week is a hotbed of new style inspiration but it's fair to say we're taking plenty of tips from the beauty looks too.

It takes an army to create a collection and present it in a concise runway show, and that includes the glam teams prepping models backstage.

As a key sponsor for this year’s event, Shark Beauty has an experienced team backstage overseeing the hair styling. Though the looks need to work with each fashion collection’s theme and aesthetic, the hair styles created also pull from current trends in hair happening internationally and on the street.

Shark Beauty’s Hair Director Madison Voloshin has selected three looks from the event that  provide some clues on the hair styling approaches that will be influential going forward.

Fresh take on traditional

This approach involves updating classic approaches to make them feel a touch more modern.

“At Carla Zampatti we created elevated simplicity with bold, architectural structure,” says Madison Voloshin. “The inspiration behind the look came from Carla Zampatti herself, she had beautiful hair with a lot of strength. I tried to pull through the brand DNA by giving the hair a strong yet feminine look using a side part and soft wave but still giving structure to the hair.

She says similarly at Marriam Seddiq she also drew from old-school styling. “Backcombing, firm hold, and no pins, to create a rich-girl look with just enough edge to turn heads.

She says the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle with the concentrator attachment was used for a glassy-smooth blow-dry, then the diffuser attachment to lock in product and shape.

Modern mermaid

Wet-look hair has slowly been making its way from red carpets and runways to an achievable going-out look, and this was emphasised with a slightly more undone take on the trend.

At Bianca Spender’s show Shark Beauty ambassador and Hair Director Chris Hunter captured the moment someone steps out of the water, with the collection being inspired by that feeling of plunging into water.

“It’s wet but not slick,” says Voloshin. “There’s separation, softness, and a sense of calm that feels beautifully real. It’s the perfect hybrid of ‘done’ and ‘undone’ with malleability and a dewy texture.”

She says to achieve this look, keep hair slicked back off the face and use the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle with the diffuser attachment to gently set the shape. Finish the look by using the RapidGloss Finisher attachment for extra polish.

Organic imperfection

Softly tousled, undone hair is always desirable, but its less often seen on the runway. At Fashion Week, we saw how it can be elevated slightly for a cool-girl feel.

“At Aje we built a French girl cool look – and then deconstructed it – to create a beautifully effortless result that redefines beauty norms,” agrees Voloshin. “The nonchalance of the hair gave effortless cool, adding volume, enhancing natural texture, and keeping the hair light and full of personality.”

She says the Alix Higgins show, led by Shark Beauty ambassador Daniel Jianing Liu, was another key show that features intentionally-dishevelled, textured, and undone hair. It was created using the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle for a lived-in look quickly and effortlessly.
