They Are Not Mutually Exclusive – Poem

I do not see why I cannot be interested

in both sciences and the arts

I could write about the world

in a way like no other

through a scientist’s and an artist’s eye

I could write about the way

the roots of plants grip the ground

how they draw in water from around

the way their leaves catch the light

and turn it into matter

into water

into sugar

and you think the beauty of biology

lies only in microscopes and lab coats?

then you do not know of oceans

of jungles and forests and desert and rain

and creatures of day of afternoon of evening of midnight

you do not know of stories about life and living

of death and leaving

dances about rain and the rhythm of thunder

if you think that the beauty of chemistry

lies only in a colourful table and explosions

then you do not know of you and me

and the earth

you do not know of bones and bees

and flowers and the dirt they grow in

poems about stars and skies

and fire and ice

because when you really get down to it

we are made of the same things

you could easily find on that colourful table

and the world contains people

and people contain multitudes

and the world contains many

and the world contains multitudes

and everything connects and contrasts

one works in harmony with the other

ZANNATUL WARA FAIRUZ

Willeton, WA

our winning poem

This month’s poem got us thinking about how most of us are classed as right brain (creative) or left brain (analytical) types. Zannatul says: “I am studying subjects that seem to be complete opposites, and I feel it’s a good thing, as it lends me a unique perspective into the world.” We agree!
