Capella Bangkok was named at No.1 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels list for 2024.
Opened in 2020,the hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and offers the ‘elegance of a grand dame combined with the intimacy of a boutique hotel,’ according to the judges. This year’s win sees the hotel climb 10 places from its position at No.11 in 2023.
No.2 and the winner of this year’s Carlo Alberto Best Boutique Hotel Award is Passalacqua, set in an 18th-century villa beside Italy’s Lake Como. Other properties in the top 10 include well-known establishments Cheval Blanc in Paris and Raffles Singapore.
The unveiling of the list at a glittering awards ceremony at London’s Guildhall marks an acknowledgement of outstanding hotel experiences, including details like design, decor and service, around the world. This year there are hotels from 37 destinations across six continents included in the esteemed list.
While New Zealand did not feature on the list in 2024, Australia is represented twice.
The Calile (No.25) in Brisbane was highlighted for it’s ‘laid-back, sun-soaked, chic Aussie hospitality.’ Judges said the hotel “riffs on modernist Miami and Palm Springs while also nodding to the design stylings of 1960s Australia and complemented its staff that “combine Brisbane’s relaxed friendliness with an admirable efficiency.”
The Tasman (No.49) in Hobart “cleverly and seamlessly blending Georgian, Art Deco and modern architectural styles” and offers “uncompromising attention to detail, a sense of relaxed luxury and a uniquely Tasmanian style and pace,” according to the awards listing.
Asia leads the way with 19 ranked hotels in total, including four in Bangkok: Capella Bangkok (No.1), Mandarin Oriental Bangkok (No.12), Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River (No.14) and The Siam (No.26), while Japan has three hotels featured including Bulgari Tokyo (No.22), which also wins the Nikka Best New Hotel Award 2024.
Europe boasts 13 winning hotels, with France, the UK and Italy each featuring four properties, including Cheval Blanc Paris (No.4), Claridge’s (No.11) in London and Four Seasons Firenze (No.19). North America has nine hotels on the list including Chablé Yucatán (No.16) in Mexico. Oceania and Africa each boast four hotels on the list.
