The top five nail trends for summer and the polishes to match
There's never been more focus on our nails as accessories as there is right now.  The key time to embrace a new manicure trend? The summer season.

Whether you’re a minimalist that loves a classic nude manicure or you’re feeling the upbeat, colourful vibes of the dominant dopamine dressing or Barbiecore fashion trends, there’s plenty of exciting ways to update your nails for the new season.

You can always entrust your nail style to a professional for a perfect on-trend look, but if you’re one of those that loves the selfcare of creating the perfect at-home mani there are plenty of polishes to embrace each key look for summer.

We asked Kylie Naronha,  national trainer for specialist nail care and polish brand Mavala to break down the most influential looks this season.

The modern French manicure

Kylie says: “The French manicure style is timeless and much like fashion, comes and goes in popularity. Gone are the days of square, thick white striped and ostentatious-looking French nails. We are now seeing a much more refined, individualised approach with a twist. Incorporating bright and bold colours is trending, like purple instead of white or using a two-toned effect and adding in an extra-fine line with a nail brush.”

Holographic nails

Kylie says: “Also known as glazed-donut effect nails, made popular by Hailey Bieber, this trend speaks to sheer, iridescent hues that wash over the nail. Pastels are always on trend but this season sees a more ethereal and space-age take. Try updating a typical pastel pink with a more quartz-like, iridescent hue.”

Going green

Kylie says: “Green is ‘the’ colour for summer from green apple brights, through to more muted sage green. It’s not surprising as green is such a life-giving shade symbolising new growth and beginnings.”

Bold, bright rainbow inspiration

Kylie says: “The need for our clothes to spark joy is stronger than ever – ‘dopamine dressing’ is a thing with bold, colourful and playful pieces (including nail polish) to elevate your mood. This will be trickling down to our toes this summer. Bright, happy shades are so playful and signal fun and optimism.”

Nail-art

Kylie says: “Nail art has been increasing in popularity and not restricted by visits to your nail professional. Anyone can create their own DIY designs and your nail art aesthetic is personal and subjective to your own style. It can be whatever you want it to be, from adding simple motif stickers to nails  – think flowers, butterflies and emojis – to more complicated abstract designs or mini works-of-art on each nail. It’s important to prepare and finish nails perfectly to give this trend lasting power.”
