The surprising beauty item you can no longer fly with
Recent changes to aviation security rules means a popular hair tool has been banned from flights departing New Zealand.

An update by the New Zealand Aviation Security Service (AvSec) to luggage rules means cordless hair straighteners that do not have a flight-mode function can not be carried in either carry-on or checked luggage.

This means popular brand ghd’s Unplugged Cordless styler is now unable to be taken on flights.

Dyson’s Corrale straightener is permitted, as long as its flight-mode feature that disconnects the battery is engaged.

Standard hair straighteners that have a plug attached and use mains power to operate can travel as normal.

The rule has changed in relation to its battery function in heat-producing battery-operated devices. Where the heating element and battery have not been isolated there is a risk it may overheat and catch fire.

What are the restrictions?

For battery powered hair straighteners to travel they must have:

  • a ‘flight mode’ that must be activated (by removal of the flight ready tag); or
  • the battery (or the heating element) removed from the device. If the battery has been removed from the device, the battery must be carried in carry-on, in an individual bag, a protective pouch, or with tape placed over exposed terminals. The battery cannot exceed the allowable watt hour limits.

If hair straighteners do not have a flight mode (by removal of the flight ready tag that disconnects the battery), or the battery cannot be removed, the hair straightener cannot travel.

While the restriction applies to flights from New Zealand, in other regions it is advised to check with your airline before flying with cordless straighteners.  Narita Airport in Japan is one example of an airport that follows the same rules banning rechargeable hair straighteners where the battery cannot be removed.

What happens if I try and fly with them?

You will be stopped at security screening and asked to relinquish them.
