It’s been pretty disheartening hearing about the devastating impact that disposable face masks are having on the planet – some scientists believe they could contribute to an environmental disaster that will span generations. Fortunately, fashion designers around the globe have been quick to put their needlework to great use to come up with very stylish sustainable alternatives. Kiwi designers are no exception, and it’s been hard to narrow down a favourite – I do hope these Juliette Hogan masks get restocked soon. However, I’m looking forward to pairing these reuseable RUBY face masks (as pictured above) with my fave RUBY outfits.

The Linden Table Lamp from Kelly Wearstler has been following me all over Instagram. Every lounge room post I save seems to have it on a side table. It’s just very cool. I first saw the black version but fell in love with the white. It’s classic, but modern at the same time. I love the light lamps give to a room, much softer and flattering than overhead spotlights. This lamp is like a piece of art, the organic symmetry adds to a room setting, rather than taking all the focus. I just love it!

Some books just lend themselves better to being read aloud, and within one chapter, I realised Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid was one of them. Set in modern-day Philadelphia, the story begins with a confrontation in a grocery store between Black protagonist Emira, and the security guard who detains her because his only logical explanation for Emira’s wandering the aisles with a white toddler — a toddler we know she is babysitting — is that said toddler must be the victim of a kidnapping. This hideous misunderstanding and the way it is dealt with sets the tone for a tale about racism, privilege, and the dangers of unconscious bias — the nuances of which are made infinitely more compelling and visceral by the narration of Black voice artist, Nicole Lewis, than the neutral, silent-reading voice in my own head would have allowed.

Like many people, I discovered Wellington-based illustrator Ruby Jones after seeing her moving artwork following the Christchurch Terrorist Attacks. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with her beautiful illustrations with their simple messages. She’s one of the many New Zealand artists I’m adoring and I’m looking forward to hanging this piece on my bedroom wall as a little reminder to slow down and pause.

I made an impulse lockdown purchase of Upright Go, a nifty little gadget to train me to improve my posture. With my home ‘office’ consisting of me propped up against some pillows on the spare bed with my laptop, I thought there was no better time to make sure I am sitting correctly while I work. Upright Go is a small device which you stick to your back that connects to an app on your phone. When you slouch, the device will vibrate, reminding you to sit/stand up straight again. I was amazed how even the slightest movement that I barely noticed suddenly meant I was slouching. I was also pleasantly surprised to find the gadget didn’t vibrate as much as I thought it would – although, after a day of using it, I felt…exhausted! So I must have been subconsciously trying to improve the way I hold myself, which means it’s working!
