The secret behind the most successful hotel in Melbourne

Simple and elegant. Why savvy travellers make a point of staying at this luxury hotel in the heart of Melbourne.

Melbourne’s historic Treasury on Collins (TOC) was the winner of Best Luxury City Hotel at the 2017 World Luxury Hotel Awards in St Moritz, Switzerland and it has just been named the #1 Melbourne hotel on TripAdvisor. With literally dozens of gorgeous offerings in this vibrant city, a hotel needs a special je ne sais quoi to stand out from the crowd.

So what’s TOC’s secret? This understated apartment hotel sets itself apart on five things: exceeding guest expectations, doing things differently, relying on word-of-mouth recommendations, inclusive guest offers and its independent status due to it not being part of a hotel chain.

Boasting no neon lights or obvious signs, there is a simple brass plaque and wrought-iron doorway fronting the elegant 19th-century heritage building. Originally the Bank of Australasia building from 1876, the building was rejuvenated and reopened as Treasury on Collins several years ago and its apartment style accommodation combined with personalised service was a hit from the start with discerning guests.

Treasury on Collins was one of the first hotels to offer complimentary, high-speed, unlimited WIFI for all guests. Also, Netflix is free to all guests and the hotel also offers a complimentary ‘Afternoon Wine Down’ with free wine and snacks. Guests undoubtedly love TOC’s little personal touches, which include luxe toiletries by Molton Brown, who hold a royal warrant for the supply of toiletries to none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Nespresso coffee machine and chocolates to welcome hotel guests.

As front office manager, John Domjan says, “It didn’t take savvy travellers long to work out that we actually offer incredible value …. reviews and recommendations now roll in and our return guest numbers keep growing.”

Treasury on Collins is centrally located at 394 Collins Street, Melbourne, an ideal location close to shops, cafes, restaurants, as well as Crown Casino, Melbourne Exhibition Centre and Queen Victoria Market.
