The Queen strips Harvey Weinstein of his British honour

Disgraced Hollywood mogul and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein has been stripped of his CBE (‘Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’) title.

Weinstein, who is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape and criminal sexual assault, was awarded the honorary CBE by the Queen in 2004, for his contribution to the British film industry.

An notice in the Gazette announced: “The Queen has directed that the appointment of Harvey Weinstein to be an Honorary Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated January 19 2004, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”

Honours such as Weinstein’s can be taken away by the forfeiture committee, with the approval of the Queen.

The UK government states that if a recipient is “found guilty of a criminal offence, behaviour which results in censure by a regulatory or a professional body, or any other behaviour that is deemed to bring the honours system into disrepute,” they can be stripped of their honour.

Weinstein has already been denounced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

He was found guilty of rape in the third degree and criminal sexual acts in the first degree in April 2020 and is currently serving his prison sentence in New York.
