Inspiration can come from many different places when selecting colour for your home.
I was given this beautiful handmade Turkish vase (below, L) by my daughter and son-in-law for Christmas. The range of blues in that piece are stunning and, along with my first painting of 2026 in blues and greens (below R), it has made me rethink our wall colours completely.
Decorating with blues and greens creates a calm atmosphere inspired by nature that is perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces.

Jacques Cartier’s quote: “Blue and green should never be seen” was talking about clothing and originated in the Victorian era when it was thought improper to wear blue and green clothing together as they were too similar in tone.
I don’t believe it! Make this the season to bring blues and greens into your home. They’re not only calming, you will see your favourite pieces in a completely new light.

Dark blue walls like this Resene Rulebreaker on the back wall and Resene Aviator on the wall at right (above) create a sophisticated atmosphere.
This rich colour adds depth and drama while still feeling calm and grounded.
Dark blue works especially well in living rooms, studies or bedrooms where it creates a cosy effect. Patterned furniture and fabric and house plants make great pairings.

Be bold. This wall and cabinet (above) are painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Resolution Blue and help the eye navigate around the room, looking at the objects and pieces you add into the space.
A simple stack of books or jug of flowers is enough to draw the eye while you let the drama of a strong blue tone do all the work.
Do not be afraid to paint furniture and walls the same colour within one space as it creates a room with modernity, giving it a simple flow.
The beauty of blue is it is timeless and welcoming, giving you options as to how you play with the objects and décor within the space.

Resene’s range of greens and blues gives you the flexibility to choose the perfect hue for your walls.
It’s important to consider the light source in your room before selecting a shade as both green and blue can shift in tone throughout the day and into the evening depending on natural and artificial light.
Pairing these colours with neutrals such as white, beige, cream or warm wood tones creates a calm, natural look.
Resene Rule Breaker and Resene Aviator and Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Resolution Blue are great shades of blue to get you imagining what your rooms could look like and the strong green of Resene Mother Nature or the pale Resene Eau De Nil are perfect solutions for multiple spaces.

Dark green walls bring richness, warmth and connection to nature. Resene Mother Nature used here (above) provides an elegant backdrop that works well in living rooms, dining spaces, bedrooms and entrance halls.
Dark green pairs beautifully with natural wood, leather and brass accents evoking a feeling of luxury.

Ahhhh, I hear you sigh. Yes a peaceful pastel in blue or green always has that lovely soft calming effect and is perfect for a dining space. Resene Eau De Nil (above) is a pale green and a reinvention of a popular hue from the late 1800s, based on the water of the River Nile.
It’s also perfect with a white accent, making any room feel crisp and fresh.
