The Packing Formula That Turns Nine Pieces Into 27 Outfits

This capsule packing hack ensures you travel light, but look great.

Every suitcase carries a few unwanted passengers. The dress you packed for a dinner that never happened and the jacket that stayed folded the whole trip. You might end up wearing half of what you brought, if you’re lucky.

Australian residents returned from 922,460 short-term overseas trips in May 2026 alone, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. That’s a lot of half-used suitcases. One packing formula fixes it with nine pieces, though you need to carefully coordinate the colour, fit, fabric and shoes, which most guides skip.

How nine pieces turn into 27 outfits

Three tops, three bottoms and three pairs of shoes make 27 outfits. The garments alone pair up nine ways. Shoes carry the rest of the count, and that’s the part of the rule that surprises people who have packed light before.

Sydney stylist Wendy Mak stretches the same arithmetic to 1,000 outfits from 30 pieces in her book The Capsule Wardrobe. It only works if every piece pairs with every other. That condition does most of the work.

Online women’s boutiques, like Blue Bungalow, stock their travel capsule with pieces that already coordinate. So, instead of packing separate outfits for each day, you can choose a few tops and bottoms that mix easily, then change the look with a light layer, scarf or jewellery.

Every top must work with every bottom

Colour is what makes the multiplication hold. One piece that clashes with a single pair of pants costs you three outfits, and you won’t spot it until you’re packing. Two neutrals plus one accent across your travel tops feels restrictive on the hanger while taking up space in the suitcase.

What one badly fitting piece costs you

Remove one garment from the grid and nine outfits go with it. That’s a third of the trip’s wardrobe, lost to a top that gapes or pants that sit wrong. A capsule carries no spare pieces to absorb a bad fit, and you find out on day two rather than in a fitting room.

Blue Bungalow measures every garment by hand and publishes the numbers, so you can check them against something you’ve already got at home. That covers everything it stocks, including pants cut for long transit days, and it adjusts its own ranges on customer feedback. Sizing runs 8 to 24 across Curve, Petite and Mature fits.

Which fabrics survive the suitcase

A capsule runs on re-wear, and creasing is what ends re-wear before the trip does. Anything creased on arrival costs you a wearing, which is why dresses made for travel use fabrics that recover on their own – no-ironing required.

Blue Bungalow builds its travel edit around fabrics that do exactly that job. Its No-Iron crinkle cotton carries texture by design, and its cotton-rich Air-Lite blend dries fast after a sink wash. Linen creases by nature, and that is the honest trade for airflow, while the Summer edit handles heat.

Three pairs of shoes earn their space

Three pairs sounds indulgent until you give each one a job. One walks all day, one goes to dinner, and one stays on your feet through the flight so it never enters the bag. Choose firm arch support and a flexible sole for the pair that will carry you through eight hours on your feet.

Cutting that third pair drops the count from 27 to 18. Zip sneakers are worth the search if security queues are a regular part of your route. Pack the heaviest pair on your feet on flight day and the maths stays intact.

Why a three-week trip needs the same nine pieces

The capsule doesn’t scale with trip length. Laundry does the scaling. A sink wash on night three turns nine pieces into three weeks, which is why quick-drying fabric matters more than a bigger bag.

Nine pieces is a small number to get right, and that puts the pressure on where you buy them. Since 2012, Brisbane-based Blue Bungalow has carried over 3,000 styles from more than 150 brands for Australian women, with new pieces added every week. Order by 3pm AEST on a weekday and it ships the same day.
