Feel like an update to your manicure approach? Good news, there's a lot going on in the world of beautiful nails.

We asked Lynn Mason, Nail expert and global trainer for Mavala Switzerland, to share what she sees as the most dominant trends over the coming months.

For those who like to keep things understated, hold onto your ballet-pink polish, but for those who love jumping into the latest looks, it’s time to embrace rich and deep tones of mocha, chocolate and olive.

We also love the playful and creative aspect of icy, frosty and pearl embellishments and nail polish finishes.

Here are her predictions:

Brown tones

Brown nails in all hues and finishes will reign supreme, following the Pantone Colour of the Year reveal, Mocha Mousse. Coffee-inspired manicures offer a versatile and sophisticated aesthetic, sealed with a gloss or matte topcoat for two different looks. Dark chocolate browns scream high fashion: rich, warm and bold, yet more wearable than black.

Deep burgundy

Vampy, red-wine tones are elegant and timeless, a hot shade this season to inject into fashion and beauty choices. Don’t forget to use a base coat to ensure the bold tone doesn’t stain your nails or opt for a natural polish (with natural pigment) to prevent leaching onto the natural nail, like Mavala’s Bio-Colors (shade Colorado) that are made with natural ingredients. The solvents are derived from sugar cane, rice and beetroot, resin extracted from wood and plasticisers produced from corn and beetroot.

Icy, ethereal and metallic accents

Expect to see shimmering ethereal shades like frosted blue, chrome-like pearl or glazed silver encapsulating the essence of falling snow and frost. A wonderful way to inject modernity into your next French manicure with multi-coloured frosty tips or simply to accessorise with a textured, futuristic overlay or icy nail art.

Moody hues

This trend is reflected with deep jewel tones like dark ruby, sapphire blue and emerald green for a dramatic, yet classic statement. Expect a neutral upgrade with an earthy and rustic spin in shades of olive green, dirty/mustard yellow and burnt sienna.

Ballet slipper pink

Understated ballet slipper pink is set to be one of this year’s biggest (and prettiest) colour trends, both in fashion and beauty. Officially a new neutral to carry through to your next manicure, surprisingly wearable and universal in appeal. Wearable on all nail shapes and lengths, this shade is a dependable option.

BB cream nails

The ‘skinification’ trend trickles down to nails, taking its inspiration from the BB Cream, a 2-in-1 makeup and skin care product. Think of this manicure as a hybrid aesthetic/treatment in one. The result is soft, opaque-looking, semi-sheer nails that are understated and not overdone.

The naked manicure

Continuing the clean-girl aesthetic, natural and healthy-looking nails are here for good. More of a ‘nail investment’ mindset, it’s all about using quality products and treatments that will help improve nail health and therefore the appearance of nails and a mani cure. Regular cuticle care will help nails grow and a nail strengthener will reinforce strength and prevent flaking. Also, don’t forget to apply a cuticle oil daily to nourish and hydrate. This will not only prolong the length of your manicure but also ensure your nails look their best on days you go polish-free too.
