The Catlins

Anything near the ocean is a winner for me – I love watching wild seas and swimming in crystal oceans. I think the Catlins is a very special place because it’s so isolated, but I also love Sydney’s south coast, and beaches like Gerroa, where you can get lost for hours wandering 90 Mile Beach. Nothing beats being near the sea.

Te Waihou Walkway (Blue Spring)

Te Waihou Walkway (Blue Spring) near Putaruru, en route from Hobbiton to Rotorua, is quite possibly one of the prettiest, short (three-hour) walks in God’s Own.

Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track

A 30-minute drive out of Christchurch is the stunning Awaroa/Godley Head track. It’s a great day walk that hugs around the clifftop, showcasing the rugged coast and windswept landscape. A highlight for me was seeing charming fisherman’s shacks dotted along the coast on the way.

Tāwharanui Regional Park

It’s hardly a secret, but I’ve always loved driving to Tāwharanui. It’s such a stunning beach – it wouldn’t be summer without spending a day there.
