The Edit This Week: The Dress For All Codes, Optimistic Jackets
Solving winter's dressing conundrums with some desirable new pieces.

Suddenly we’ve been plummeted into winter, and clutching at things that make us feel better about it all. We’re not the only ones, as playful and bright bags enter the chat whether you’re headed for a northern summer or just want to lift your winter layers.

Speaking of those layers, it’s been a season of ‘wear a cool jacket with everything,’ and that approach shows no sign of abating. This week we’re sharing two new favourites, but almost every store and brand has a version to suit your style right now.

We think it’s because fashion has veered into a decidedly casual moment – think barrel-leg jeans and flats with everything – so the jacket is the other piece of this puzzle.

Textural favourites also factor at this time of year, so a delicate knitwear piece made of merino or cashmere helps lifts spirits, just don’t make dinner in yours, like I did recently. Though they say they’re easy to hand wash, it’s life admin that I could have avoided!

Here are the fashion updates to know about right now:

Meshki Jacket

Having previously believed the grand total of Meshki’s collection involved slinky dresses made for wedding guests, or those heading to the Euro sun (or even a combination off both) we were recently introduced to this season’s outerwear collection. The Australian brand has some versatile pieces that are on trend but never overdone.

We’ve been loving the cropped fit and polished finish of this Paige Jacket, but the slightly longer-line belted Adaline Jacket is on the wish-list too.

Mi Piaci flats

Is it just us, or are heels practically extinct? Even at the after-dark soirées we’ve attended lately, nary a pair higher than a cm or two were to be seen. If you’re wondering what to wear instead, here’s your answer. These flats go with everything, but look particularly good with the barrel-leg jeans, or relaxed, pull-on pants everyone is wearing right now. They also come in black or cherry leather.

Maggie Marilyn Blazer

Maggie Marilyn’s ‘The Optimist’s Winter’ collection has just dropped, and the sheer shirts had us wondering if you has to be optimistic about the temperature to wear them. This wildflower jacquard is definitely a warmer option, but the upbeat vibes are in full effect. What a dreamy, sunshiny piece, and yes, it looks great with jeans.

Rebe cape dress

Another winter dressing challenge – a black tie dress for those aforementioned soirées. In brilliant fashion, Rebe comes to the rescue. This new column dress in back or olive green comes with a chic removable cape, so you can have coverage when its cooler, but re-wear in the summer months.

Tiffany & Co Feather Earrings

A timeless design from the jewellery house’s Elsa Peretti designs, these studs are another addition to the collection that will elevate any outfit but have a lifespan longer than a month or two.

SIR skirt

Fashion boutique Muse can always be relied on to refine our fashion focus, their edit is always exceptionally tasteful. Luxurious fabrics, flattering cuts and desirable brands you know but aren’t seen everywhere, it’s a place I go when I want to feel special and great in my clothes.

New to Muse’s expert selection is Australian brand SIR. The name is an acronym meaning ‘Separates, Intimates, Ready-to-wear,’ which does nicely sum up the pieces, from draped bias skirts and tops to fluid slip dresses that could well be nightgowns. Simple but not spare, we can see them being very useful pieces in a modern wardrobe.

Our pick is this skirt (unsurprisingly one of the label’s bestsellers), worn with a knit and pointed boots right now and a simple tank on holiday or when it gets warmer.
