The Best Valentine’s Day Gifts For 2025 Based On Their Love Language

The Best Valentine’s Day Gifts For 2025 Based On Their Love Language
For a more memorable Valentine's Day approach why not be inspired by the way your partner likes to give and receive love.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day (February 14th, if it’s slipped your mind), classic gifts like flowers, chocolate and jewellery are always popular. However they aren’t the most unique gifts that really say, ‘I see you.’

A thoughtful and romantic approach is to consider their favourite things, hobbies and activities and tailor your approach accordingly.

This can be tricky if your relationship is brand new, or on the flipside, you’ve been through many Valentine’s Day’s together, and have exhausted your list of ideas that might surprise or delight.

If this is the case, it can be useful to consider their specific ‘love language.’ Though that $100+ bunch of roses sounds extravagant to you, they may simply prefer a sunset walk on the beach.

The five love languages

Need a refresher on what your partner’s might be? The five love languages, originally developed by Dr. Gary Chapman, describe how people give and receive love in relationships. They are:

Quality Time: Spending meaningful time together, giving undivided attention, and engaging in shared activities.

Words of Affirmation: Expressing love through verbal compliments, appreciation, and kind words. For example, saying “I love you” or praising someone’s efforts.

Acts of Service: Showing love by performing helpful actions, such as doing chores, running errands, or preparing a meal to ease someone’s burden.

Physical Touch: Expressing love through physical affection, such as hugs, kisses, holding hands, or cuddling.

Receiving Gifts: Giving or receiving thoughtful presents as a symbol of love and care. It’s not about materialism but the thought behind the gift.

The great news is, this year February 14, Valentine’s Day, falls on a Friday, it’s even more perfect to enjoy a date night or some time together. Without further ado, here are the best gifts to give this year, if you choose based on their love language.

Quality Time – Go to the Zoo

Choose to do something together, where you can talk face-to-face and become engaged in an interesting or memorable activity will have you talking about the occasion for years.

“Remember when we went to the Zoo and had dinner?” It sounds unforgetable to us!

This year Auckland Zoo is holding ‘Valentine’s Late at Auckland Zoo’. You and your beloved, (or group of pals) can experience the animals at sunset, and have a good old giggle as special keeper talks take you through the weird and wonderful world of animal courtship display.

View the animals in their enclosures and enjoy a romantic dinner at Auckland Zoo’s Valentine’s Late event.

Elevate the experience (and get a little more time gazing into each other’s eyes) by booking the Valentine’s Late Dinner. A delicious three-course Valentine’s themed dinner will be served in the Zoo’s Old Elephant House restaurant, and includes a glass of bubbles as well as dishes like beef sirloin mignon and a melting heart chocolate semifreddo. There are also vegetarian or vegan options available.

Book tickets to Auckland Zoo’s Valentine’s Late entry or Valentine’s Late Dinner.

Words of Affirmation – Say ‘I Love You’ in a new way

Sharing your words of affection, encouragement and admiration is an incredibly romantic way of showing your love.

You could do it in a playful way by adding a series of small, heartfelt notes on colorful paper (eg “52 Reasons I Love You”) and present them in a jar or box. Or, craft a playlist of love songs with a note explaining why each song reminds you of your relationship.

L-R: Personalised Journal from BooBear Gifts; Personalised Journal from Calla Concepts

We love these personalised leather engraved journals. Have their name written on the front and write your favourite memories together in a list inside the front cover.

Or, make a more serious and lasting declaration, engraving a message or initials on a piece of jewellery. We love these simple pieces you could add a message to.

Another way to make them feel the warm fuzzies on the day is to make your love public. Post about them on social media, raise a toast at dinner with some thoughtful words or have a large bouquet of flowers sent to their workplace.

Acts of Service – Do all the planning

This love language is a little harder to gift on Valentine’s Day.  Instead, like many signs of affection, it’s best carried out throughout the year, doing little practical jobs that will ease your partner’s burden.

L-R: Draw a bath with a bath bomb or soak, like Salt by Hendrix Roase Soak and lay out new pyjamas for them like these silk pyjamas in black or floral print from Papinelle.

When it comes to gifts, you could turn the day into an ‘I’ll do it’ day, by making a number of gestures throughout the day. Start off by bringing them coffee or cooking breakfast in bed. Organise to have their lunch sent to work, and have dinner on the table when they arrive home. Run them a bath and gift them new pyjamas to change into.

Another simple solution is to organise a Valentine’s Dinner, picking the place, paying and organising transport, so all they will have to do is get ready – taking the burden off them to come up with a plan.

Physical Touch – Book them a massage or spa treatment

Of course the most obvious option is to shower them with love in it’s physical form, starting with plenty of hugs and kisses!

But if they enjoy physical touch, a massage is a great option. You could make them vouchers for a massage from you, give them a massage at home with luxurious oils or lotions, or choose a top spa and book them in.

Book them a massage from one of the range of luxurious treatments at East Day Spa, or go together and experience a relaxing massage ritual side-by-side.

If they like something more energetic, book the both of you for a date centered around physical closeness, like dancing classes, skating, or yoga for couples.

For a truly extravagant gift, book them for a massage in a holiday location like Fiji, Hamilton Island or Hawaii. When they are confused on opening a gift card listing the voucher, tell them you’re taking them on holiday too!

Receiving Gifts – given them something they’ve always wanted

Technically the easiest to achieve, but in reality, choosing a thoughtful gift can be harder than it seems.

People who enjoy receiving gifts don’t necessarily expect large or expensive presents but find joy in the effort or consideration you have put in. That’s not to say they wont have a big smile if you present something pricey or shiny and top-of-the line.

Instead of flowers, why not choose a plant, like an orchid or fern that lasts longer than wilting blooms. If they love beauty items, consider compiling a pamper pack with face masks, face roller, flannels, a soft robe and candle. If you want to make a grand gesture, may we suggest a beautiful watch, high-tech hair tool or jewellery containing diamonds?
