The best TV shows of 2022, as recommended by the MiNDFOOD team
2022 was once again a year of standout television. From psychological thrillers and royal dramas to off-beat comedies and adorable anime, we bring you the best TV shows of 2022, handpicked by the MiNDFOOD team.

The Bear

The Bear is one of the best TV shows of 2022 and will hook you straight away. It follows young fine dining chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) as he returns to his hometown of Chicago to run his brother’s sandwich shop after he passes away. It throws you right into the world of the high-pressure kitchen, which can be incredibly stressful at times, but when driven by a compelling storyline and seriously mouthwatering food shots, ultimately makes for riveting television.” – Kathryn Chung, Concierge Editor

Better Call Saul

“Better Call Saul wrapped up this year after six seasons. They played the long game with the storyline, but boy was it worth it. With so many shows (and streaming services) competing for eyeballs, it’s rare these days to have a series that is such a slow burn. But that’s what makes Better Call Saul some of the best television in recent years. It’s the ultimate origin story; a well-thought-out investigation into what makes a person become who they become. An absolute must watch.” – Ashley Nolan, STYLE Editor

Taco Chronicles: Cross the Border

“There is no doubt I have a passion for cooking shows, I love learning about different cultures and techniques. Taco Chronicles shares how each American city’s tacos are inspired by immigration and produce availability, the eagerness of the people to taste ‘home’ and to share what food tastes like where they come from, how it smells. I love foods unique ability to bring people from different cultures together, and Taco Chronicles documents this so, so well. A must watch for food lovers!” – Lillian McHugh, Integration Director

Wednesday

“A modern take on an old favourite The Addams Family. Jenna Ortega as Wednesday is brilliant. Love her quick wit and delivery of grim tidings. Wonderful to see Gwendoline Christie in action after Game of Thrones.” – Janine Bourke, Account Director

The Patient

“My top show for 2022 would have to be The Patient. I’m a big fan of Steve Carell as a comedian but I’ve never seen him in a dramatic role this impressive. He plays Alan Strauss, a psychiatrist who is treating a young man with an uncontrollable temper who has the unfortunate habit of killing people who piss him off. As the series plays out, Alan tries to heal Sam and simultaneously figure out how he can escape from the serial killer holding him hostage. The show is almost entirely a two–hander but it is never boring. In fact, I and millions of others, would hang out each week for the next episode to arrive. Gripping stuff, with compelling performances from both Carell and Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson, as Sam.” – Gill Canning, Chief Sub-Editor

The Crown

“A new and really stunning cast. Elizabeth Debicki as Diana could be the woman herself. Jonathon Pryce (Philip), Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II) and Lesley Manville (Margaret) are extraordinary in their roles too. New Zealand director Jessica Hobbs directed the first two episodes to deliver a wonderful viewing experience.” – Janine Bourke, Account Director

Station Eleven

“After the past three years we’ve had, you might be put off a plot line that follows survivors of a pandemic, but Station Eleven manages to flip the theme on its head to deliver something incredibly moving, cinematic and poetic. Based on the novel by Emily St. John Mandel, the 10-episode miniseries follows several, seemingly unconnected characters as they navigate a new world, including Kirsten Raymonde, a young woman in a traveling symphony played superbly by actress Mackenzie Davis. This TV show blew me away.” – Kathryn Chung, Concierge Editor.

Gudetama

“Gudetama is very resigned to his lot in life (and his jiggly butt is hilarious, cute and somewhat disturbing all at once) while Shakipiyo is ever the optimist. Our kids are very into Japanese anime so this is just the thing for them.” – Nykke Coleman, Art Director

Fire Country

Fire Country is a bit of a different take on the usual firefighter TV show. Inmates join firefighters to fight wildfires in Northern California. Good to see the action in a small town and rural environment.” – Alicia Giudice, Advertising Co-ordinator

Our Flag Means Death

If you’re a fan of Taika Waititi’s off-beat and silly sense of humour, then you’re bound to love Our Flag Means Death. The HBO Max comedy stars Waititi as the infamous pirate Blackbeard alongside fellow Kiwi actor and friend, Rhys Darby, who plays “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet. While I expected the laughs, it was the endearing romantic storyline that took me by surprise in all the best ways. The show’s supporting cast were also fantastic and I can’t wait to see them again in season two.” – Kathryn Chung, Concierge Editor
