A number of talented brands are turning out fresh finds to help up our accessory game, from more affordable trending pieces, to one-off high-end designs that incorporate precious and semi-precious stones.
No longer is jewellery a subtle afterthought, new designs are taking center stage, demanding attention as the focus of our outfits.
We take at look at the latest collections from some of the country’s contemporary jewellers and the style inspiration behind them.
Meadowlark
L-R: Spiral Necklace Pave; Spiral Earrings Oversized Pave; Spiral Signature Hoops Set
Following the success of its popular bow-laden collection last year, design-led jewellery brand Meadowlark has been periodically dropping instalments of its ‘Visions’ collection in 2024, with the final part, a hypnotic spiral addition, having just landed.
“Nature’s favoured form for the transmission of its energy (think whirlpools, galaxies, and our own DNA structure), the spiral radiates out and draws in simultaneously, infinitely and eternally,” says Meadowlark, of its captivating pieces that come in large and small pave-studded earrings, as well as pendants and a ring.
Cathy Pope
L-R: Red Tigers Eye Yellow Gold Chunky Choker; Blue Aventurine Gold Oval Necklace; Ruby Gold Oval Earrings
Cathy Pope has a way with gemstones and crystals, bringing a pop of colour to fine and fashion jewellery, and combining these unique elements into predominantly chunky and bold settings.
From amethyst to smoky quartz, to lesser known stones like blue aventurine and apatite, the pieces are said to imbue different emotions and benefits for the wearer, something Cathy excels at explaining on a visit to the brand’s new Ponsonby store.
Jasmin Sparrow
L-R: Petal Earrings; Jasmin Earrings; Dahlia Bracelet
Known for simple, chic, but often statement-making pieces, the latest collection ‘Petal’ by Jasmin Sparrow is no different. Taking a botanical inspiration, the smooth, sleek and gently curved forms “pay homage to the ever-changing landscape of flowers, their natural allure and hidden meanings”.
The collection includes a petal-shaped form as bold earrings in silver or gold, hugging the ear, as well as simple twisted organic forms in rings, bracelets and necklaces.
Zoe & Morgan
L-R: Cusco Hoops; Munay Earrings; Munay Ring
Zoe & Morgan’s latest, combines natural and historical elements in its collection ‘Niña Florestra,’ or daughter of the forest. The collection takes its name from various aspects of Andean culture and geography, as designer Morgan conceived the collection while travelling through the Peruvian Amazon.
As such, geometric creations that hark back to the elements and textiles of the area are prominent, and gold reigns supreme.
Silk & Steel
L-R: Petite Perle Ring; Petite Pearl Necklace; Figaro Fine Necklace; Noire Necklace; Noire Hoops
Using enamel and calling on vintage elements updated with a fresh, modern twist, the latest drop from Silk & Steel is called ‘Noire’.
With slim designs perfect for layering, the highlight of the range is a hand-painted black enamel pendant and earrings featuring a delicate North star, with a freshwater pearl at its heart. Similarly, tiny freshwater pearls are nestled in understated gold earrings and rings.
Nodding to the collection’s name, Onyx and black cubic zirconias are also featured, in a bold cocktail ring and slim ear cuff.
