Sisley might be known best-known for its luxurious skincare offerings, but the arrival of the Parisian brand in the haircare world did not disappoint.  You won’t regret passing on the post-shampoo hair mask in favour of Sisley’s  Pre-Shampoo Purifying Mask with White Clay ($130). Think of it as a way to push reset for damaged, unhappy tresses as the innovative formulation eliminates pollution and impurities from your hair and scalp.

Long gone are the days of reaching for a harsh, gritty exfoliator in the quest for luminous skin. In 2019 chemical exfoliators became the holy grail for those after radiant skin.  Unlike other peels that can irritate the skin, Murad’s clever bi-phase Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel ($145 from Murad.co.nz and Caci nationwide) features a luminosity-restoring blend of glycolic, lactic, malic, salicylic and tranexamic acids alongside apoptogenic holy basil that helps counteract irritation. Plus, it accelerates the cell renewal process by 33 per cent in just seven days.

Tom Ford has already amassed a cult-like following within the beauty world thanks to his inimitable fragrances and luxurious make-up offerings.  In 2019 Ford set about changing the skincare game, launching his own science-driven line: Tom Ford Research. To formulate the range, Ford teamed with EstĂ©e Lauder to assemble his own team of top scientists to create a line that blends cutting-edge skincare science with luxury. The first two products, which launched the collection – Tom Ford Research Serum Concentrate and Crème Concentrate – have been three years in the making. Both have been formulated with white porcelain cacao, caffeine and gyokuro – a unique variety of Japanese green tea – and are said to support the skin’s natural energy for a more radiant, even-toned, youthful complexion.

If you’re yet to be convinced you need to be investing in standalone skincare for the eye area – this game-changing serum for the purveyor of luxury skincare, La Prairie, is guaranteed to change your mind. Dual-chamber La Prairie Skin Caviar Eye Lift ($705) features two formulations –  one encapsulated in La Prairie’s iconic caviar beads and the other in an innovative gel-cream emulsion – that when combined work to restore youthfulness to the eye area. The serum has been designed to be used on the entire eye area including the brows which means with daily use the eye area is revitalised, lifted and redefined.

Over the years matte lip colours have gained a bit of a reputation for drying out lips. Chanel‘s clever Rouge Allure Ink Fusion ($64) however, shook up the make-up world with its second-skin-like formulation. The richly pigmented matte shades glide on to provide lips with a serious hit of colour while keeping them comfortable and nourished right around the clock.

At-home beauty treatments gave in-salon treatments a run for their money in 2019 and  Elizabeth Arden Prevage Progressive Renewal Treatment ($299) was the one that stood out from the crowd.  The gradual, four-step peel system contains Polyhydroxy Acids – which are less irritating than traditional AHAs – that work to slough away dull, dead skin cells and enhance cell turnover. By the end of the four-week treatment, skin is radiant, fine lines and pores are less visible and skin tone is refined.

It took quite some time for the acclaimed Dyson hair tools to finally touch down on New Zealand shores but it was well worth the wait. It was the Dyson Airwrap Styler ($849) that really revolutionised the way we style our hair in 2019. Unlike other styling tools that use high temperatures to style tresses, the Airwrap Styler uses advanced technology to dry and style hair quicker than before while preventing hair from heat damage.

There was certainly no shortage of new fragrances to spritz this year but it was Van Cleef & Arpels Santal Blanc that really bewitched our senses. It’s the perfect summer scent with its intoxicating heart of sandalwood, zesty mandarin and tonka bean which really come to life on warm, sun-kissed skin. An essence might seem like an unnecessary addition to an already packed skincare routine but Dior’s Capture Youth New Skin Effect Enzyme Solution really does improve the overall health of skin. Powered with exfoliating papaya enzymes, the resurfacing water gently clarifies and hydrates skin. Rumour has it that it’s also a favourite for celebrity make-up artist Daniel Martin – the man behind Megan Markle’s wedding-day beauty.

Caring for Your Skin Over the Festive Season

Christmas is just around the corner which tends to mean a chocka social calendar for most of us. And while we all want our skin to be healthy and glowing for the special occasions that come hand in hand with summer, a few too many late nights and festive season indulgence can start to show on our complexions.

We spoke with skin expert, Trilogy Product Research and Compliance Manager, Kerry De Villiers, to find out all the tips and tricks you need to know for caring for your skin over the festive season.

Is it too late to start prepping my skin for the festive season and summer months? What can I do to get it in tip-top condition?

Exfoliate! There’s no better way to quickly rid your face of tired skin to help it look and feel healthy and radiant for the festive season!

A consistent routine which includes regular exfoliation and effective hydration will help give you a beautiful healthy natural glow. Make-up sits better and lasts longer on well-hydrated skin – you’ll also need less of it if your skin is healthy and in good condition. And for an immediate fix, follow up your exfoliation with a mask packed with performance natural actives, like our Trilogy Mineral Radiance Mask, formulated to deeply cleanse the skin while working overtime to revitalise, energise and purify skin to leave a soft, smooth and radiant complexion.

If the festive season is already starting to show on my skin how can I counter some of these effects?

Our skin is one of our largest organs. Not an original phrase but it’s true, so it makes perfect sense that the vital nutrients we obtain from a fresh and healthy diet nourish our bodies (including the skin from the inside out), while a varied skincare regime will help nourish our skin topically.

Superfoods are a massive trend that have made their way to the beauty industry as they are packed with antioxidants and will give your skin and body that rejuvenating top up, perfect for the festive season.

What impact can sleep deprivation have on our skin?

It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Our skin, like our entire body, has what is known as a circadian rhythm: a certain pattern of functioning over a 24-hour period. The body systematically replenishes itself while you sleep so the skin is at its most receptive to nourishing natural actives at night while the natural rejuvenation process occurs.

If you are burning the candle at both ends this can impact the skin’s natural process of restoration resulting in complexions looking dull and lacklustre and in turn can speed up the signs of ageing.

If you’re not getting a regular amount of sleep, add an overnight face mask to your reduced sleep routine. Overnight face masks are a great way to boost the skin’s natural process of rejuvenation which occurs while you sleep. Trilogy Age-Proof Overnight Mask treats the skin to a quickly absorbing formulation which works through the night to restore elasticity, hydration and suppleness to ensure skin wakes up looking firm, brightened and
refreshed.

Why is it so important to take off make-up at the end of the day?

Nighttime cleansing is essential for nutrients to absorb and nourish the skin. If you don’t cleanse your face before bed, not only do you leave on the grime from the day, clogging your pores, dulling the complexion and encouraging unwanted breakouts, you also miss out on essential skin nutrition.

Using a cleanser that’s right for your skin and that you enjoy using, with a beautiful texture and fragrance, will  take the chore out of cleansing. And once you see the improvement in your skin’s health and radiance, it will soon be as routine as cleaning your teeth!

I’ve got blemish-prone skin and the festive season really exacerbates my problems. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?

Increased daily water intake combined with good cleansing habits is the aim of the game for blemish-prone skin during the festive season where late nights and overindulging become the norm! Water, water, water! Increasing your water intake or drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will help rid the body and skin of toxins, help to keep skin hydrated, supple and with more of a radiant glow!

It is important to keep blemish-prone areas clean. The build-up of excess oil (sebum) and skin cells need to be removed to keep skin looking healthy and radiant – water alone cannot remove oil and debris. Wearing make-up only increases the need for effective cleansing! Twice a day is ideal, but the general rule is always to cleanse at night, even if you’re not wearing make-up. Otherwise, all the grime from the day just stays there, clogging your pores, dulling the complexion and encouraging unwanted breakouts.

If your cleaner is too harsh, it will disrupt the skin’s protective mantle, leading to a vicious cycle of oil overproduction and uncomfortable surface tautness. The right balance and blend of natural oils in your cleanser is not only beneficial, but it’s also essential for a healthy, balanced complexion. Look for a cleanser with a blend of pure plant oils and calming natural actives, such as Trilogy Very Gentle Cream Cleanser, to help re-balance your skin
appearance.

What are your go-to beauty tips for making tired skin look more awake?

1. Keep an eye cream with a cooling tip in your handbag to instantly refresh your party face…or better yet keep it in the fridge to totally cool and refresh your eye area en route to a party!

2. A Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner helps set your make up and instantly hydrate your skin while the beautiful hints of rose, geranium and lavender soothe your sense…perfect right before or after a festive gathering.

3. Wear a mattifying facial SPF – you will be able to party a bit longer if your skin isn’t sizzled by the time Christmas lunch is actually ready.

4. Treat yourself to a face mask a week or two before the festivities begin – perhaps while you’re wrapping presents or baking Christmas treats!
