Puppy Paradise
Costa Rica's "Land of the Strays" is helping to re-home nearly 1000 stray dogs.

Could this be dog heaven? Territorio de Zaguates, or “Land of the Strays, is a one-of-its-kind organisation that is seeking to protect and re-home Costa Rica’s huge stray dog population.

The privately funded organisation is entirely run by volunteers and houses nearly 1000 dogs. Each pup is rescued from the streets and taken to live amongst the rolling hills of Costa Rica and given the love and attention they need, in order to find their forever homes.

The mutts are celebrated for their individual characteristics, aiming to re-educate the public about the beauty of shelter dogs and encourage adoption, over the purchasing of pure breeds.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the park at any time to meet the dogs in person and see who would be the best fit for them.

Volunteers conduct group hikes, taking the fun-loving dogs on frequent walks giving them the opportunity to bond with their perspective owners and get to know each other.

The dogs spend most of their days lounging around in the sun, playing with each other and partaking in various activities but they also have access to a comfortable and modern house, where they are kept warm and cozy at night.

The ‘Land of the Strays’ is a no-kill shelter, meaning that the pups are free to live there forever, should they be unable to be adopted. The dogs are all neutered and vaccinated upon rescue so that they don’t contribute to the growing issue of stray dogs in Costa Rica.
