The Art Gallery of New South Wales' new building has opened, marking an exciting new era in the cultural life of Australia.

The new, stand-alone building – designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architecture firm SANAA – almost doubles the gallery’s exhibition space.

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand, who has overseen the museum’s transformation for the past decade, says the expansion boasts “such a strong sense of place and such an innovative display of art”.

“From our dazzling new stage, we now offer even more art experiences worthy of our location, our history, the many who have contributed to our development over the past 151 years and the many who will look to us for joy, inspiration and insight in the coming decades,” he says.

A free programme of exhibitions, collection displays and new commissions, featuring works by over 900 artists from around the world, has now opened across the new art museum campus.

The expansion includes the largest commissioning programme in the gallery’s 151-year history, featuring nine major new site-specific works by Australian and international artists: Lorraine Connelly-Northey, Karla Dickens, Simryn Gill, Jonathan Jones (scheduled for completion in mid 2023), Yayoi Kusama, Lee Mingwei, and New Zealand-born artists Richard Lewer, Lisa Reihana and Francis Upritchard.

Our summer issue of STYLE takes a deep dive into the expanded art museum, including a look at the site-specific commissions created by New Zealand artists.
