Princess Sofia, 35, volunteered her services at the Sophiahemmet hospital in Stockholm, for which she sits as honorary chair.
“As the honorary chair of Sophiahemmet, she wants to help out in this crisis that Sweden is in,” Ms Margareta Thorgren, information director at the royal court.
The princess completed a three-day course to train as a hospital assistant. Joining her were airline cabin crew and hotel employees as part of a re-training programme. Princess Sofia will support doctors and nurses through kitchen shifts, cleaning and disinfecting instruments.
Unlike other European countries, Sweden has not imposed lockdown measures and has instead urged people to follow social distancing rules.
Sweden has had 13,216 COVID-19 cases and 1,400 related deaths.
Who is Princess Sofia?
Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland, joined the royal family in 2015 when she married Prince Carl Philip. The couple have two children, Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel.
Before marrying Prince Carl Philip, she worked as a model, yoga instructor and appeared on the reality TV show Paradise Hotel.
She’s been involved in several charity projects, co-founding Project Playground, a charity that assists underprivileged children in South Africa.
