Personal stylist Stacey Beatson spends her days shopping for, and with, her clients.
With great relationships with designers and retailers alike, she’s privy to previews of collections for coming seasons and has a great grasp of the key trends to look out for.
While she loves trends, she encourages people to pick and choose the updates that suit their style.
She says while it’s important to periodically modernise our style approach, it doesn’t have to be drastic. The intensity of brand messaging and speed of trend cycles can also be incredibly overwhelming, leading to rash purchasing decisions for many.
“My motto is K.I.S.S: “Keep it simply stylish,” she says. “I like to work in a way that simplifies things for people.”
She says knowing what suits us means we’re less likely to fall victim to swiftly passing fads that sit unworn in wardrobes, wasting money and causing regret.
“We can buy something and then a month later we can feel like, oh, I’m over it, it’s had its moment. I need to move on, get the next thing.”
Instead she’s a fan of bringing in some “new energy” with occasional seasonal updates and key accessories, but also purchasing thoughtfully and intentionally, and “staying the course” of your own personal style, once you know the colours and shapes that work well for you.
“Some people at the beginning of a season feel like, ‘I need a whole new lot of clothes.’ Stacey says.
”Instead, think about, what did you wear last summer, or the ones before? Let’s bring some of those things forward and wear them with something that you’re enjoying wearing right now. Sometimes when you’re trying to bring the whole look forward, it doesn’t relate as well, it doesn’t feel as good.”
In her popular Instagram account, Beatson shares that mid-blue double-denim, button-up shirts and long maxi skirts are just some the trends from last summer she’s bringing forward to 2024.
Stacey’s pick of new-season trends
The experienced stylist shares some of the looks she picking to buy into for spring.
Stacey suggests the below trends that that are similar to these pieces L-R: Rebe Tailored Vest; Ganni peplum top; Marni balloon skirt; Isabel Marant dress; Leo Lin dress
Puffed balloon skirt
“I absolutely love a soft balloon hemline. Adding some volume down low can be very effective in balancing out a shape.”
Peplums
“I would be looking for a beautiful cotton top with a peplum detail. That or a soft bow detail that brings in a little element of femininity, whether you’re wearing jeans or shorts or a skirt.”
Single colour dress
“Instead of print dresses, this is the spring and summer I’d be looking for an easy, wear-everywhere dress in a neutral colour like white, camel, sand or khaki.”
Tailored vest
“Tailoring is still massive. You can’t go past a tailored vest, which you can wear with a long floaty maxi skirt, or linen pants.”
Exuberant style
“Internationally, there definitely is a little bit more excitement, creativity and exuberance in styling, so something that really shows off your personality and self-expression.”
