Stripes are strong, decisive and unyielding. there’s nothing soft or fluffy about them.
As life gets overwhelming and political and economic landscapes are uncertain, perhaps that’s why stripes are making such a mark in interiors this year.
While using a striped piece to add a dominant visual accent is popular in both modern and classic interior styles, stripes in furnishings are also coming into play in a more eclectic way too.
Colourful stripes and refined ticking stripes are being combined with other patterns and prints, particularly in the decor trend known as ‘eclectic vintage’ to make an interior space sing with personality.
On her return from Paris earlier in the year, Rebecca Fitzpatrick, owner of Atelier Textiles, was enthusiastic about the bold pattern’s appearance in the latest collections.
In her report for STYLE she suggested they could be used in combination.
“Stripes, stripes and stripes” she says of the hot focus right now. “Mix them up together or use separately in your scheme, there are no rules!”
She suggests the design Scilia from Pierre Frey’s Bellagio collection (above) from Atelier, that includes a number of stripe and bold geometric designs, as a highlight.
“This design is woven in Pierre Frey’s EPC-certified workshops in the north of France,” she explains.
“These high-performance matte stripes on coloured backgrounds are suitable for both indoor and outdoor, although probably not to be left outside full time in Down Under due to our extreme UV and environmental conditions,” Fitzpatrick says.
Rugs, cushions, vases and dinnerware are other areas where adopting stripes offers bold, but non-committal, impact to interior spaces.
Neutral tones similar to the rest of the room offer a way to draw the eye if dramatic colour isn’t your thing.
