Spring Refresh

Spring Refresh
MiNDFOOD’s Editor-in-Chief Michael McHugh celebrates the change in season by embracing nature with a favourite colour palette.

I love the colour green. Decorating with green brings a refreshing, versatile palette to any space and evokes a feeling of nature, balance and calm. I remember painting a dining room a ‘hit-you-between-the peepers’ bright green in one house we renovated. At every dinner party we held, the conversation always came around to those green walls and how to choose the perfect green when decorating. From soft sage to deep forest tones, green adapts beautifully to different moods and styles. Lighter greens create an airy, tranquil atmosphere, ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms or sunlit kitchens. Darker shades add depth and sophistication to living rooms and dining spaces. Pair green with warm neutrals like beige, cream or soft wood tones for a natural look, or contrast it with crisp whites and metallic accents for a modern edge. Green also pairs well with art, rattan furniture and natural fabrics. Whether as a bold feature wall or subtle backdrop, green effortlessly connects your interiors to the calmness of the outdoors.

There’s nothing like snuggling up with your favourite magazine in the quiet corner you have created in your home. The subtleness of Resene Eau De Nil with lamplight creates a warm, intimate ambience. Soft lighting deepens green’s natural richness, adding layers of shadow and glow that shift with the evening. Muted sage or olive walls take on a velvety depth, while golden lamplight highlights textures and details, making the space feel calm and inviting. This combination balances freshness with cosiness, perfect for reading nooks, bedrooms or quiet corners where comfort and tranquillity are the desired mood.

Here’s your next spring project. Not sure what to do with your child’s paintings and those sketches and works of art you have collected? Get framing with old frames and hang them salon style. Decorating with Resene Paddock on the wall and a collection of artwork enhances the wooden furniture within the space, creating a warm, curated look. This earthy-green backdrop adds personality and visual interest, mixing frame styles and sizes, giving depth while keeping a cohesive colour palette within the room.

Resene’s range of greens gives you the ability to choose just the right hue for your walls. Make sure you look at the light source within your room before choosing a shade of green, as depending on the natural light within a room, walls change throughout the day and night. Pairing green with neutrals like white, beige, cream or wood tones gives a natural look. Two of my current favourites are Resene Highland and Resene Chill Out.

Using a monochromatic approach feels fresh and brings a calming sense of nature indoors while maintaining a sophisticated, thoughtfully co-ordinated aesthetic into your living spaces. Decorating with Resene Chalet Green, the room space works with designer green chunky velvet sofa, green-inspired flooring and artwork to create a harmonious immersive space. Layering different green tones like these darker olive walls with deep velvety upholstery and hue-adjacent green tones for the flooring adds depth without overwhelming the eye. Artwork with botanical or abstract green elements ties the palette together. Be brave and stay within the green family of tones.

Soft green walls in a dining room create a serene, welcoming atmosphere that encourages relaxation and conversation. This gentle hue, Resene Haven, pairs beautifully with natural wood furniture, linen tablecloths and fresh floral arrangements, enhancing its organic charm. In daylight, soft green feels airy and uplifting; under evening lighting, it takes on a cosy, intimate warmth. Complement with brass or ceramic accents for a refined touch. The result is a timeless, versatile backdrop that makes every meal feel both comfortable and special.
