SPQR was an institution on the Ponsonby strip, the restaurant having been a go-to for Aucklanders, expats and international visitors during its 27 year tenure.
After the shock abated, it’s fair to say everyone was asking the same question: What’s next? Now the answer has been revealed.
A new restaurant called ‘Jacuzzi’ opens in the spot this week, welcoming customers from Thursday, February 20.
The new eatery aims to have the same upmarket, celebratory vibe, but with a few differences, according to those responsible for its development, Bronwyn and Jessica Payne.
The bar and bistro has been freshened up with new furniture and fittings, though the famous copper bar is still in place, as well as a chic lounge area, nicknamed ‘the red room’.
Inventive cocktails, a martini menu, local and international wine and beer, and top champagnes will be flowing and the menu aims to highlight the best produce from Aotearoa, presented using flavours and culinary techniques from around the world.
“Keeping the copper bar, frontage, and many more elements of this place, while pulling new elements in from our own travels has been a rewarding focus for us to achieve what we believe is a true blend of what our customers will appreciate,” the Payne sisters said in a statement.
“We have added a number of recognisable, or even some hidden fun items in this venue that locals and regulars will be discovering for years to come.”
The two say they are excited to host Ponsonby locals and other diners to the iconic site once again. Well familiar with the area, Bronwyn and Jessica Payne also own popular Italian dining destination Elmo’s and Hoppers Bar on Ponsonby Road.
