Mount Etna in Italy lit up the night sky with a display of burning lava on Saturday, as rivers of smoking red lava streamed down the slope of the new southeast crater.

The activity on Europe’s tallest volcano drew tourists and locals to watch as Italian authorities monitored the eruptions.

The 3330m-high volcano often erupts but rarely causes damage, it can burst into spectacular action several times a year, spewing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island.

The volcanic ash cloud reached 4.5 km (15 000 feet) above sea level.

According to Reuters, the last major eruption was in 1992.
