After a three-month state of emergency due to the pandemic, Spain's borders will reopen to travellers.

Eager to boost Spain’s tourism, which makes up 12% of the GDP, the government has launched a tourism campaign called Spain for Sure.

Borders were opened up to visitors from the UK and European Union on Sunday, 21 June. The border between Portugal and Spain will be opened up on 1 July.

“Spain is one of the safest countries in the world,” it’s stated in the Spain for Sure campaign video.

UK tourists, who are the largest group of visitors to Spain, will not need to undergo the 14-day quarantine on arrival through Spain’s borders.

“We will allow British visitors to enter Spain just like the rest of the European Union as from 21 June, freely and without the need for a quarantine,” said foreign minister Arancha González Laya.

Previously, people arriving into Spain were required to undergo a 14-day quarantine.

Following the end of the state of emergency and reopening of Spain’s borders, all arrivals will only have their temperatures taken at the airport, undergo a visual assessment and provide contact details.

The government’s €4.3 billion plan was unveiled earlier this week in an effort to restore confidence in Spain as a safe destination.

“We are world leaders and that’s why every step we take will be a safe step. Through prudence and responsibility we will show that Spain is a safe and healthy destination,” said prime minister Pedro Sánchez.

Masks will remain mandatory in public spaces when physical distancing is not possible.

Spain has had a total of 245,938 cases of COVID-19 and 28,322 deaths.
