In a rare interview with The Times, the Countess got candid about life as working royals and said it is very likely her children will have to work for a living.
“We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living,” she said.
“Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely.”
Sophie, who married the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward in 1999, has two children, 16-year-old Louise and 12-year-old James.
She said Louise and James both have a lot of normalcy in their lives, despite their royal upbringing.
“They go to friends for sleepovers and parties. I guess not everyone’s grandparents live in a castle, but where you are going is not the important part, or who they are. When they are with the Queen, she is their grandmother,” said the Countess.
The Countess said she experts Louise to follow in her cousins’ footsteps by attending university.
“[Louise is] working hard and will do A-levels. I hope she goes to university. I wouldn’t force her, but if she wants to. She’s quite clever, so I think probably.”
