Solomon Islands hit by M6.7 earthquake

The Solomon Islands have been rattled by a large earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the M6.7 earthquake struck just after 6.30am local time (7.30am New Zealand time) at a depth of 54km.

There was no tsunami threat.

The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake was centred 66km northwest of Kirakira in the Solomon Islands.

The last significant earth tremor in the region was a M5.4 quake, that occurred 52km northwest of Kirakira on June 22.

This is a developing story.
