The annual Las Vegas event signposts new developments likely to pave the way in the future.
While the show encompasses a huge variety of products, services and software from big and small players alike, it has traditionally introduced some compelling innovations in the world of health and beauty, too.
This year appears to be no different as the trade show, held from January 8-11, gets underway.
In early beauty updates, tech giant Samsung unveiled a beauty mirror as part of new smart home updates. Giving new meaning to asking “Mirror, mirror on the wall,” gaze into the the Samsung MICRO LED Beauty Mirror and it will analyse your skin condition and offer personalised solutions.
The Beauty Mirror can detect skin characteristics such as wrinkles, pores, pigmentation, and redness. In partnership with top Korean skincare brand, Amorepacific, the mirror can also provide specific product recommendations.
Another idea using personalised skin analysis and advice is seen in L’Oréal’s announcement of a device it calls Cell BioPrint, created through a partnership with Korean startup NanoEnTek.
The device aims to cut down the uncertainly and flip-flopping on products your skin actually needs now, as well as predicting the ingredients that will help your skin and mimimise sings of aging in the future. It’s a move from reactive, to proactive skin approaches we’re likely to see a lot more of.
However it differs from other skin diagnostics in that it does not only reply on visual cues and photo imaging of the skin but uses biology, measuring the presence — or lack thereof — of certain proteins in the skin.
Cell BioPrint, set to be used at beauty counters, analyses a skin sample gathered from a strip placed onto the cheek for several minutes.
It uses what L’Oréal calls ‘lab-on-a-chip technology’ to provide insights using unique biomarkers in the skin that can indicate key components of healthy-looking skin and longevity. L’Oréal says it can calculate skin’s age and provide advice on how to slow down the appearance of aging, predict how responsive your skin will be to certain key ingredients such as retinol and predict potential cosmetic issues before they become visible.
Amorepacific has also been named an Innovation Award Honoree this year for its generative AI-based makeup application, ‘WANNA-BEAUTY AI.’ The voice-activated chatbot application uses generative AI to help users discover beuty looks that suit them.
The application first analyzes skin tone, facial features, and proportions with user photos. The AI solution, trained with data from makeup artists, then offers makeup recommendations and virtual try-ons. Users can also virtually try on someone else’s makeup on their faces, all done conveniently through a voice consultation interface.
Further updates in the beauty area are expected as the trade show continues.
