In the era of latte makeup it was hard to believe cool-tones and metallic looks would ever return to favour.
We’ve been seeing warm nudes and burnished tones and subtle, ‘clean-girl’ makeup trends for a while now, so it has been a surprise to witness a cool browns and silvers return to the makeup lexicon.
A hallmark of the 90s, nude shades dominated the decade with taupe, suede and espresso browns, most with matte finishes.
Silver shadow was sometimes used as an accent, or blended into a smoky-eye look.
Those approaches appear to be back to degree, with new product launches and celebrity appearances cementing the trend. It may be because the northern hemisphere has entered its winter season, but it also gives us Down Under the perfect look to play with for holiday and Christmas parties.
Makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, known for often working with Kim Kardashian, has received a lot of attention for the release of his new eye shadow palette. Called Ethereral Eyes, the palette includes 12 neutral shades – including a sparkling silver – and is said to be inspired by the moonlight.
Another look we love? Andie MacDowell’s appearance on the the runway during L’Oreal’s “Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris – Walk Your Worth” show at Paris Fashion Week.
MacDowell paired a strapless silver gown by Elio Abou Fayssal, with silver eyeshadow that matched her shimmering silver hair.
“When I do my own makeup, it’s very, very simple — though I do like a smokey eye,” MacDowell told People. “I quite often do it with a little bit of purple because it brings out the green in my eyes.”
The star says she loves trying new looks.
“I enjoy wearing makeup,” the L’Oréal Paris spokeswoman says. “So much fun. And that is one of the perks. We get to play with colors and lipstick and all of that.”
How to wear silver eye looks
We’re using the re-emergence of silver as a sign to rock the look for this year’s Christmas parties.
The key to making silver work is to anchor it with dark eyeliner and/or mascara. As it is a pale colour that reflects the light, it can risk washing you out unless you return dimension and shape.
Framing the colour with lashings of mascara does just this and looks incredibly glam.
For Andie MacDowell, makeup artist Val Garland chose to line the lash line close to the inner rim of the eyes with black eyeliner and smudge it slightly for a sexy effect.
For lips, go modern with a soft, dewy sheer colour, or up the amp with a more statement tone. MacDowell wore a soft rose-pink lipstick that matched the fresh sweep of blush on her cheeks.
