Audrey Dang
Photographer,
New Caledonia
Audrey Dang is a Caledonian photographer based in Nouméa.
“I’ve always loved photography since I was a child. I did my studies on cultural events, but I did my internship in the only photo gallery in West Africa at the time, which was in Mali.”
In Mali, Dang met many professional photographers, which allowed her to develop her passion for photography.
“One day I said to myself, it’s good to organise things for others artists, but one day, I will focus on what really excites me. That was a turning point in my life. I didn’t want to have regrets, so I left the gallery to become a photographer.”
While it was difficult not having a regular income, and the instability that comes with that, Dang doesn’t regret her decision. “I wanted to find something special, something that would stand out.”
She joined networks and ended up finding her niche, photographing the communities and culture of New Caledonia. In 2024, she was selected by the government to join the delegation of artists representing New Caledonia at the Pacific Arts Festival in Hawaii – an opportunity to show what New Caledonian artists and especially women can do “with a perhaps different eye.”
Audrey’s artistic message is “Believe in your convictions and in yourself because we all have potential. You just have to seize the opportunities.”
